ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Parents of students in an Orange County school will have to keep watch what colors their children wear. A new dress code policy at Odyssey Middle School sparked 150 suspensions and even an arrest. The new dress code was approved in April 2007 after a student advisory council reviewed it. Administrators handed disciplinary slips to kids who wore black, white or red. When one teenager asked why and what was wrong with the T-shirts they had him arrested for trespassing, disrupting an educational institution and disorderly conduct. No phone calls homes. Vivian Ingles said she’s upset because nobody from the school called to tell her son was behind bars.“No school official gave me a heads up as to what was going on,” she said. “When my son was brought into custody, I feel that as a minor, someone should have called me.” Kathy Marsh a spokesperson from Orange County Public Schools, she said "once law enforcement steps in on a district campus, it’s not school leader’s responsibility to make that call, it’s the police." Yet we trust the school with our children and they want to act as parents. As a parent I would have called. Lazarus Ingles has been suspended for ten days. He has a court appearance on October 31. “I understand if it said Latin Kings, Bloods something like that,” Lazarus said “But just a plain white shirt or a shirt that says Rocco wear, come on.”
